Why do we tip? Restaurants can pay the waiters less and push the responsiblity of providing livable wages to their customers. This is in the restaurant's best interest and the workers don’t have the bargaining power to resist. There is no union for waiters. Why are tips are percentage based? Is it twice as much work to serve a beer than it is to serve a coke? No. This must be something cultural.

I feel more hesitant showing people my writing than showing them my drawings, music, or code. It's too clear a view into my mind.

Seeing the masses of people in Chinatown, all vaguely aware of each others' existence, was a wonderful experience. It made me feel small and unscrutinized. Each of my actions didn't really matter. No one cared. There were certainly people misbehaving, running into each other, yelling. But this didn't bother me much. The significance of each individual event didn't seem all that great. There would be thousands more such interactions very soon.
